In a recent interview aired this morning on CBS This Morning, Microsoft chairman Charlie Rose asked if he was satisfied with the performance of Steve Ballmer as CEO. Nothing there was "a lot of amazing things" completed under the direction of Steve Ballmer in the last two years, Gates said he was not satisfied with the company's innovations.
"Well, he and I are two of the most self-critical people - you can imagine," Gates said during the interview (see video below). "And here was a lot of amazing things that Steve's leadership has been with the company in the last year. Windows 8 is the key to the future of the computer surface. Bing, people see it as a better product search, Xbox. ""But - is it enough?" he said. "No, he and I are not convinced revolutionary in terms of things, you know, we're doing everything we can."
Gates was particularly critical of Microsoft's position in the smartphone sector, where the company currently holds only 2.4 percent of the market, according to the latest data from IDC.
"There are a lot of things like cell phones, where we did not have in the head early .... We have not missed cell phones, but the way we went about it did not allow us obtain leadership. So this is clearly a mistake. "
The main objective of the interview was the Melinda and Bill Gates Foundation, the philanthropic which Gates has devoted most of his attention away from Microsoft in 2008.
