Windows 8 killers: iPad Round 1

The murder iPad Windows 8 tablet laptop has arrived. The problem is, most are not ready to send the iPad - MacBook Air or elsewhere - yet.

Until now, the examiners to change shape Windows 8 tablets have not been kind. Otherwise known as "removable" devices can take the form of a tablet or joining a standalone keyboard base to become a close facsimile of a full-fledged laptop.

And one of the main selling points - if not the main selling point - is that you can run all your favorite Windows applications. In other words, this is not a Windows application RT private.

The catch is disappointing Intel Atom processor Z2760, which presents itself as a kind of paradox: it promises to execute any existing application in Windows, but it does not really offer.

CNET review of the HP Envy x2, entitled Half-tablet, part laptop, while Atom summarized the x2 this way: "a slower processor Atom in performance means it is far behind most ultrabooks, even if it is a price like this. "

Another review, over a similar configuration Acer Iconia W510 is even more severe:

"The W510 marks about a quarter of the speed of applications compared to general delivery standard Windows portable 8 today, and he can not really run any graphics benchmarks."

And what about the Samsung 500T Ativ? ExtremeTech called "ridiculously low power."

The review continues: "The real work is atomized by shifting office stuttering performance, and a paltry amount of storage."

Yep, storage is another problem. Some of these come with detachable flash drives that are only 32GB or 64GB. This leaves very little space to store applications after Windows 8 has occupied a disproportionate share of the estate of the unit. While the bad news. Fortunately, alternatives are emerging.

Microsoft Surface Pro tablet - should arrive next Saturday, February 9 - sport a fast laptop-class Ivy Bridge chip. Samsung and the Samsung 700T ATIV Smart PC Pro: a detachable quick with the same chip. (See comment below).

And expect more products like this when more battery friendly Intel Haswell chip land during the summer. In addition, a new Atom is on the way - probably at the end of this year - which has a completely revamped (read: faster) processor architecture and will be available in quad-core variants.

Finally, do not forget that the systems mentioned above are not "convertible" as the Lenovo Yoga, Taichi Asus or HP Revolution. These are the first laptops, tablets second and, therefore, offer level performance laptop.

And perhaps convertibles and notebooks with touch screen are the best PC manufacturers can offer for the moment. A shot at nirvana laptop tablet will have to wait Round 2.
