Anonymous hacks MIT after the suicide of Aaron Swartz

Just hours after the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has promised an investigation into his role in the events leading up to the suicide of Aaron Swartz, online hacktivist group Anonymous defaced the website of the school.

Swartz, who defended the freedom of access to documents on the Internet, committed suicide Friday. The 26-year-old was arrested in July 2011 and accused of stealing 4 million documents from MIT and JSTOR, an archive of scientific journals and academic papers. He faces $ 4 million in fines and 50 years in prison if convicted. After MIT President L. Rafael Reif issued a statement this afternoon promised a "thorough analysis of the involvement of MIT from the moment we received an unusual activity on our network in the fall of 2010 until now," Anonymous targeted at least two websites MIT. Lacking usually unstructured group of fiery language, the message displayed on the website was a call for reform in the memory of the Internet activist behind.

After calling the continued Swartz "a grotesque miscarriage of justice" and "a perverse and distorted shadow of justice that Aaron died fighting for," Anonymous has presented its list of targets in a section titled "Our wishes "

We call this tragedy as a basis for the reform of laws on computer crime and overzealous prosecutors who use them.
We call this tragedy as a basis for reform of copyright and intellectual property law, referring to the relevant principles of the common good to the greatest number, rather than private gain some.
We call this tragedy as a basis for greater recognition of the oppression and injustices heaped daily by some people and institutions of authority over anyone who dares to stand up and be counted for their beliefs, and more solidarity and support in response.
We call this tragedy as the basis for a renewed commitment and a flawless internet free and unhindered spared censorship of equal access and free for all.
