Intel CEO: The PC is shape-shifting into a tablet

in the wake of weak earnings report today, Intel CEO Paul Otellini, could not stress enough that "radical" new ideas subsume PC tablet experience.

Here are some comments that suggest Otellini Intel PC partners are aggressively going after the tablet market with Windows 8 latest equipment. Most of these comments came in response to questions from analysts.

Radical transformation

We are in the midst of a radical transformation of the computing experience with the gradual disappearance of form factors and the adoption of new user interfaces. It is no longer necessary to choose between a PC and a tablet. Convertible and detachable combined with Windows 8 and touch provide a 2-in-1 computing experience without compromise. '

"Haswell," then "Broadwell Drive" radical new designs:

In the first quarter, we are launching Haswell. The largest generation to improve the battery life in the history of Intel ... We have a line of sight on what our customers are designing around Haswell, which is based innovative this year [processor] product, and Broadwell, which is next year. I saw the prototypes of industrial designs. They are really exciting products. Our customers do not have this level of performance in this kind of form factor before. 10-plus-inch [screen size] types of products will be the performance standard PC, enabled by these convertible form factors detachable who lose weight when Haswell and Broadwell lights.

Competition from ARM:

We examined the [new] A15 [ARM chip]. We know that our own silicon in terms of Trail Bay Trail and clover + and we are very comfortable, we can maintain a lead performance here. These devices are simply becoming very small computers, and that's what Intel is exceptional.

Note: + Clover Trail is Intel update the Clover Trail Atom chip used in currently marketed tablets. That comes later in the first half. Bay Trail is a complete redesign of the Atom processor, scheduled for the end of this year.

Foundry: would not a competitor:

We are very interested in being a manufacturer selected for the casting of certain customers. We do not consider ourselves a foundry in general use or in competition with general purpose foundries. We would not take business that allows a competitor. We have a strategy crawl-walk-run. We are still in the crawl phase.

Note: the chip foundry is a contract manufacturer of chips for other companies. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is now considered the largest general use foundry. There was a rumor today that Cisco is now an Intel foundry customers. Otellini has not commented on the rumor.
