Microsoft Surface sales well below shipments, says iSupplid

Sales of Microsoft Surface tablet first fell well below the threshold of 1 million euros, while yields were high, IHS iSuppli says CNET.

Deliveries of the aircraft surface RT, which began in the last quarter in the channel were approximately $ 1.25 million, but sales from the channel "were significantly lower, perhaps in the order of 55 to 60 percent of this figure, "said Rhoda Alexander, an analyst at iSuppli, citing estimates from the market research firm.

That would put sales in the range of between about 680,000 and 750,000 on the basis of these percentages.

This kind of "sales" percentage is not uncommon, however, according to Alexander, adding that she has seen similar percentages of newly introduced Android devices.

And, needless to say, sales out almost all manufacturers paltry against Apple, the gold standard, where the percentage is usually in the mid-range of 90 percent high or even 100 per cent. Apple sold 22.9 million iPads in its most recent quarter.

And Alexander said she sees little evidence of a continuous production of the device Microsoft RT - running a limited version of Windows 8 on top of an ARM processor - first quarter because Microsoft is still to sell the inventory.

But this report inventory is not unique to Microsoft. Amazon Kindle fire when it was introduced, was that surplus stocks included in the next quarter. As a result, Amazon cut production temporarily, said Alexander. Surface RT has other challenges, too. The rate of return on the device was "very high," said Alexander. "If you put the high rate of return with [sales out] low sell-through rate is a sign of a problem," she said, adding, again, that the first Kindle Fire return rates were very high and low sell-through.

Why high return rates? "It seems to be linked to a large number of cases a steep learning curve of the window [8] OS - which is not necessarily intuitive," she said.

And another problem is looming large perhaps this year. There is a "lack of interest" manufacturers of peripheral devices in the pursuit of RT for the moment, she said.

For Microsoft partners, the question is: "Where is the victory for us" - says Alexander.

During a conference call last week Compensation, CFO Peter Klein repeated a number of times that the area has contributed to sales. "While this quarter [Surface] was a contributing factor to the growth of incomes in the Windows," said Mr. Klein.

During the call, Microsoft Surface cited as part of non-OEM sales rose 40 percent as.

Microsoft has not talked about sales figures. And the company does not provide a number when contacted.

Microsoft is about to release a second line of tablets, the Surface Pro, which executes the full version of Windows 8 on Intel mainstream. Alexander says she sees more dynamic industrywide for these types of devices.
