Duel disks: 128 GB Apple's response to the surface Pro

With 128 GB iPad, Apple is obviously trying to steal the limelight from Saturday to roll out Microsoft Pro surface. But this does not mean that you can assimilate disk performance of the iPad Pro with the surface.

Carefully timed release of the Apple iPad 128GB of storage is ostensibly the iPad on par with Microsoft Surface Pro 128 GB, which will go on sale Saturday.

Well, not quite.

Apple uses a flash drive optimized for energy efficiency, while Microsoft promotes solid-state drive speed - the same kind used in ultrabooks disk. (And Apple MacBook, too.)

"Apple is using something that is more optimized for the cost factor / power / shape while Microsoft uses the type of SSD you paste it into a high-end Ultrabook or another PC," Anand Shimpi of Anandtech says TRENDS KSR .

Surface for Pro, Microsoft went with a SSD mSATA-based interface, according to Michael Yang, memory and storage analyst at IHS iSuppli. And Microsoft has confirmed today mSATA interface TRENDS KSR.That 's the same interface used in ultrabooks with read speeds of 400 MB per second and 250MB per second write.

But Yang said that it is really a combination of silicon, which should give Microsoft tablet catchy disk performance. "Surface Pro [a] material almost identical to a ... Ultrabook Core i5, 4GB of DRAM and SSD mSATA should provide users with highly energetic performance with the new operating system Windows 8," said Yang .

And a high-performance SSD with Windows is required, which is designed as a multitasking operating system: users typically have multiple windows open on office tasks and multiple execution (eg, video encoding and editing a image) simultaneously. This is not the case with iOS, which is designed to operate only one thing at a time.

Yang and added that there are many other factors that come into play, including how the operating system interacts with the storage system.

And speaking of software, another important difference between the two devices has nothing to do with the hardware and everything to do with the software. Microsoft has publicly stated that the surface 128 GB with Windows 8 will ship with Pro 83GB of storage available.

IPad Apple 128GB, on the other hand, will undoubtedly have much more storage available due to the small size of the iOS.
