Intel science competition takes 40 seniors as finalists secondary

A full 40 of the best and brightest of the nation high school graduates have been selected as finalists for the Intel Science Talent Search 2013.

Offered by the Society for Science and the public, the program sponsored by Intel chose the finalists based on several factors, including their own scientific research and achievements and leadership, both within and outside school.

The contest asks students to find scientific solutions to answer questions and solve problems that affect the world.

"This year, Intel Science Talent Search finalists have a wide range of research, optimization of algae oil for biofuels to develop a new treatment for blood cancer," Wendy Hawkins, executive director of the Intel Foundation, said in a statement. "It's exciting for the future of innovation, because the United States needs the 40 seniors in high school, and others like them, to question, to explore and help resolve some of the greatest challenges facing the planet. "

The 40 finalists will travel to Washington, DC in March to compete for $ 630,000 in scholarships. Finalists from previous years have also had the opportunity to meet the president and leading scientists and display their research at the National Geographic Society.

The winners in the various categories will be announced March 12. These categories include bioengineering, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, physics and space sciences, social sciences and behavior, and plant science. The winner of the talent search will be home $ 100,000 of the Intel Foundation.

40 This year's finalists were selected from 300 semi-finalists and more than 1,700 newcomers.

Over the last 72 years, participants in the search for talent sciences continued to win seven Nobel Prizes, two Fields Medals, five National Science Medal, eleven MacArthur Foundation Fellowships and even an Academy Award for Best Actress.
