iPad tablet continues to lead, but keeps shedding market share

The iPad remains the tablet king of the world, but Android rivals continue to carve out a portion of its market share.

Apple shipped a total of 22.9 million iPads worldwide in the last quarter thanks to the request of the iPad Mini and the availability of iPad 4th gen, according to IDC Worldwide Quarterly Tracker Tablet. This number is in line with IDC forecasts and showed a 48.1 percent increase in shipments over the same quarter in 2011.

But for the second consecutive quarter, the share of Apple in the global tablet market has fallen. In the fourth quarter of 2012, she recorded a share of 43.6 percent, against 46.4 percent in the previous quarter and 51.7 percent a year ago.

Secondly, Samsung shipped nearly 8 million Android and Windows 8 tablets combined, a 263 percent jump over the same quarter of the previous year. During the same period, the share of the company's tablet market grew 15.1 percent from 7.3 percent.

How do other tablets makers are doing?

No. 3 Amazon shipped more than 6 million Kindle tablets last quarter, up from 26.8 percent a year ago. But its market share fell to 11.5 per cent against 15.9 per cent.

Fourth, Asus has seen a sharp increase in shipments and market share in one year, thanks to strong demand for the Nexus 7 tablets. And in the No. 5 spot, Barnes & Noble shipped nearly one million Nook Tablets, although shipments and market share fell two during the last year. Finally, Microsoft hit the tablet market with its surface RT tablet in October. But the company failed to make it to the top five after shipping a little less than 900,000 tablets.

RT tablet surface starts at a price of $ 499, while the Pro will begin next area at a cost of $ 799. IDC believes that the adoption of Windows 8 tablets and RT will be slow if the price can go down.

"Reaction to the surface of the tablet business with Windows RT was cut at best," IDC program management Ryan Reith said in a statement. "We believe that Microsoft and its partners must quickly adapt to market realities small screens and lower prices. In the long term, consumers may grow to believe that tablet computers with high-end operating systems desktop worth a higher premium than other tablets, but until then ASP (average selling price) on Windows 8 RT and Windows devices need to descend to drive higher volumes. '

Overall, tablet shipments in the fourth quarter reached 52.5 million, an increase of 74.3 percent from the third quarter and 75.3 percent from the fourth quarter of 2011. Lower selling prices, a variety of new products, and spending all gay holidays helped boost the tablet market to record levels, IDC noted.
